I Saw Three Ships
Choir with soloists
Words and music are both English traditional.
The very lively arrangement is by the distinguished British organist and conductor Simon Preston, who was organ scholar at King's. He went on to take charge of the music at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and in between 1981 and 1987 he was Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey.

  • The chorister who begins this piece, in addition to having a lovely voice, is an absolute joy to watch— both in this video, where he solos, and in all of the other carols from this year in which he joins the ensemble of the choir. He seems to radiate a spirit that so many King's choristers, wonderful though they sound, keep bottled tightly in under those Eton collars. It's wonderful to hear such a fine solo but equally fantastic to see this King's treble so clearly enjoying himself. Bravo!

  • @avitalheatherton Well, I know of Libera and certainly enjoy some of their songs. I find that I miss the lower voices fairly quickly, though, so children-only ensembles are, for me, more a detour off of the larger world of SATB (etc.) choral music.

  • @liberavieve are you a libera fan? :D

  • The tempo is downright breathtaking! And it does make the solo a bit short of breath, giving him no time to breathe... a 10-yo won't have a perfect technique yet.

  • Makes me wanna go to church

  • @liberavieve Now I'll share an American thought, if our British friends will permit. Here we have a tradition of little candles three or four inches high, made in the exact shape of that same little robed choirboy, fairhaired, roundcheeked, and smiling. They stand all over the house as ornaments -- and are never lit or burned, year after year (except once in a great while by sadistic younger brothers such as mine). I can all but see the wick coming out of this little guy's head.

  • What a fine, mischievous and grand arrangement for the organ! No wonder the kids are rockin'.

  • @srapplebaugh About 9 months ago "liviurmybby" posted a comment claiming that he was the chorister in this video. His comment is now marked as spam. Now if you view "liviurmybby's" profile, he claimed to be 34 years old (now 35), a "Hot, Sexy model up for anything" and from " Calafornia, USA". Dunno about you but I'm having difficulty reconciling this profile with the boy in the video :)

  • This song always gives me goosebumps!

  • WOW! I have listened to this song all day, amazing job by the choir. Who is the tenor that sings solo towards the beginning? Very talented boys and men! :-)
