Petroleum
is one of nature's most toxic substances. Industries connected to its extraction & refining are also dangerously toxic. The gulf disaster is only one of many ways that fossil fuels have poisoned the planet.
But just like addicts, we continually cling to fossil fuels-
no matter who dies-
no matter whose health suffers-
no matter environmental damage done-
no matter what wars must be fought.
Energy companies are the drug dealers and we are their indentured servants.
We pay them with electric bills and when we fuel our cars. And we believe in our addiction.
This is not an inevitable consequence of the industrial age. It is the result of decisions made when other options were available. Those other options were drowned out or eliminated in the grab for market dominance.
Of all the inventions and resources that were subverted to gain this dominance, the most notable is industrial HEMP.
Why hemp?
Beneficial in 1000s of ways, hemp would make American farmers wealthy. This video- made with a narration by Hugh Downs- tells the hidden story.

The oil, stalk, and pulp of hemp are superior competitors to cotton, paper, plastic, paint, steel... and petroleum. Its prohibition allows these markets to exist without any real competition.
Hemp grows anywhere, needs no pesticides, and its refining produces no toxic waste. Instead- our forests have been destroyed and our soils and waters turned into a TOXIC TOILET BOWL.
Cultural choices have been made that perpetuate the addiction to dirty fuels and their byproducts, but if we can think out of the box- we can free ourselves from the choices of the past.
We don't need power plants or solar and wind farms. We can totally break free of our servitude to energy companies.
Constructing, heating, and cooling our homes uses 40% of fossil fuels. We can build beautiful structures that hold their temperatures & are sound-proof and earthquake-proof.

By law, all new structures should be energy neutral. There are many ways to achieve this.

The roofs of our cities can be platforms for solar and wind power. Mirrors magnify solar generation and so we can design SOLAR TOWERS.

Existing homes & cars can be retro-fitted with loans based on former fuel bills. Any car you like can be changed to battery-power. New science might enable generators to run from car wheels.

But, we should not be forced into huge cars. Thousands die every year from car accidents. Our streets belong to everyone-- safely.
Bicycles, joggers, and even golf carts should be given first rights to our streets.
