Once a month, Poetry Hickory is held at Taste Full Beans Coffee House in Hickory, NC.
Before the event, a new group - Writers Night Out - met at 5pm to discuss what they could do in conjunction with Poetry Hickory to further writers in general.
Then at 6:30 the Open Mike began (you must arrange to be a reader in advance see even coordinator Scott Owns for details http://www.myspace.com/scottowenspoet ). The readers this month were Richard Carroll, Jeanne Auckley and Tony Rankine.
This was then followed by two featured readers:
Bill Griffin is a family doctor in rural North Carolina and
long time Board member of the NC Poetry Society. His poems have appeared in many regional and national journals including:Southern Poetry Review, Tar River Poetry, Poem, Pembroke Magazine, and Illuminations. His most recent chapbook is Snake Den Ridge,
a bestiary (March Street Press 2008). In it the various creatures of the Smoky Mountains speak their mind; each poem is accompanied by a drawing by Bills wife, illustrator Linda French Griffin.
DB Cox can be found in the early-morning hours, bent over a Fender Stratocaster guitar, in roadhouses and juke joints throughout the south. He describes his playing style as a look at life through drunken, godless eyes To quiet his tortured soul, he writes. He has published four books of poetry. His chapbooks are Passing For Blue, Lowdown and Ordinary Sorrows. Main Street Rag published his latest collection called Empty Frames.

Thanks to Taste Full Beans for hosting the event (I must say the Moroccan Mint Green Tea and Chicken Salad sandwich I had were fantastic!) and to Main Street Rag and the NC Writers Network for supporting the venture.
