Black Canyon Rapid, Main Salmon River 2011 — HD

A blowout in Black Canyon created a new rapid on the Main Salmon River in 2011. The new rapid floods out Salmon Falls, formerly the first large rapid on this stretch of river. Jet boats had been unable to run the new Black Canyon Rapid carrying a load, so jet-back river trips and some lodges have had their business curtailed so far this year.

The river-right run looked potentially runnable at this level, but the run would be technical with exposed rocks that would require quick moves. As you can see, the river-left run was steep but simple, and the laterals weren't difficult to manage. I'd recommend you scout the rapid before running it.

As a passenger (and someone who's only been on this river three times) on another boat in this party, I found this rapid a lot scarier than BJ did! Maybe not the most hair-raising on the river, but that hole on the right of the tongue sure looked bigger in person :)
