Franklin J. Schaffner won an Oscar for directing "Patton" and also directed some of the best films of the 1960's and '70's, including "Planet of the Apes," "Nicholas and Alexandra," "Papillion," '"Islands in the Stream," and "The Boys From Brazil."

  • Another great vid, Rick! Thanks so much for such a wonderful tribute to one of Hollywood's most talented and underrated directors, Franklin J. Schaffner! "Patton' and 'Planet Of The Apes' are two of my all-time favorite movies!

  • @44excalibur Two of my favorites as well .And "Papillion" I saw on the first run probably 12 times the year it came out! To this day it's probably my favorite adventure movie of all time. Just saw it again after many years (when I made this) and it holds up tremendously well. They just don't make 'em like they used to. Just wish I could sit down everyone who thinks that flying poop in 3D from "Jackass" is so cool and show them ANY of Schaffner's films; there is an alternative. Thanks again!

  • the name doesn't ring a bell, but Patton is one of my favorite movies ever!

  • @jollymanbigboy Now you know who directed it! lol! "Patton" is among my favorite films of the 1070's as are all these others that Schaffner directed. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.

  • Excellent my friend! An intense music accompanies these sensational pictures!! I remember and love Papillon, but I find great performance by Gregory Peck in The Boys from Brazil!! A great director worthy tribute! Added in playlist!

  • @TheBigValley I always thought that Steve McQueen (and perhaps Dustin Hoffman, too) should have been among the 1973 Best Actor Oscar nominees. Such great performances! Thanks, Mirko, for commenting!

  • Papillon! love that film and Steve Mqueen and Dustin Hoffman!

  • There are really some astounding and breathtaking images to find in the films of Schaffner. It's rather baffling to me, that he seem's to be a rather forgotten film director. I don't see the reason for that.

Sadly there are no clips of LIONHEART in here which is a rather flawed but interesting film set during the crusades.

  • brilliant...when I had previously commented on macho 70's action I should have included 60's as well because I was thinking about Steve McQueen movies when I said it....from Bullet to Cool Hand Luke..'Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand" that is one of my all time favorite movies and lines (top 10 movie for me).

  • And by the way, your selection of music was beautiful! :)

  • One of your best job!! Wonderful music!!

  • @jollymanbigboy He was an outstanding director. These are among his most famous films, but there are many others. You can tell by this video that he could make grand spectacles ("Patton" & "Nicholas and Alexandra") as well as smaller, more personal films ("Islands in the Stream"). Also check out "The War Lord" (it stars Charlton Heston), a medieval epic and "The Best Man" a political satire. His films from the 80s were not nearly as good as his earlier features.

  • I used to go see some of the Planet of the Apes movies. The other clips are interesting too. Another nice post!
