General Motors Da's 1431 & 1410 on a Railway Enthusiasts' Society excursion from Auckland to Rotorua in September 1999. Cab shots aboard Da 1431 climbing the Mamaku grades.
I live in Mamaku, my dad was a NZR worker when I was a child. I grew up on jiggers. The Mamaku line is being restored and it's bringing back memories of better times.
In the days of the old NZR they had a runaway coming down the Mamaku's and they lost a crewman. DA1406 had to be rebuilt. the front headlight was enclosed in a complete glass cover. Memories.
Love listening to those noisy G12's again. Probably why my hearing is down. Thundering through tunnels at notch 8. The 1430's were Aussie built and had the 26C/L self maintaining air Brake and they used them on the Limited express when new. You had to be careful when running light engine as only the driving wheels had brake blocks. The older 1400's were US built and had the 6SL brake which you lapped A bit like the old number 4 brake. Fun and games. Thanks a million for the memories.
I've been on the new Mamaku train railway thing its a 4 seater cart thing and it's where that thing on yogi bear is

Nice to see a bit of NZ history - I remember these big red locos as a kid. Sadly I didn't pay enough attention to them at the time!

G12s are cool, we had the 1400 and the 1450 classes in Queensland.
There is a great video of a G12 on YouTube showing a Norwegian GM7707. I watch it all the time.
