The Great Apostacy written by James E. Talmage is the most damaging and best read in my opinion.
Get a copy of it for yourself, check one out, It explains much concerning the works within the old and new testament as well as the Book of Mormon ANOTHER TESTAMENT OF JESUS CHRIST.
As it pertains to the Apostacy. I haven't read it for a long time, but it was great read!

I think it's ok, he's taking what he knows and expanding on it by filling in the gaps and holes with the missing links found within the LDS faith.
He was inspired to be a spreader of the word, this is very tenable, however, to then be blessed to realize that the fullness of the Gospel and the correct baptism were found thru the Authority direct from Jesus Christ thru St. Peter to today Thomas S. Monson.

I agree with his characterization of the apostasy for the most part. I think some of his wordings choice are indicative of a Minister from another religion so it is difficult to ascertain exactly what he means.
