I've flown aboard a rocket airplane (the Xracer for the Rocket Racing League), and the wind noise is mighty loud even when the engine isn't running. The audio on this recording is from the noise-canceling microphones by the astronauts' mouths, and by design they don't pick up external noises.
During the early part of the reentry, though, the air is so very low density that it is pretty quiet. I haven't visited those speeds yet, myself, but one of these days...

Get the book "Riding Rockets" if you want to understand how the whole process works. Good Read

They have microphones for their intercom system, and don't forget that the shuttle is a glider and there are no engines running, so the sound isn't too bad at all.
-
Brightness of the HUD. It was being completely obscured by the runway lights.

turn up your hud if you have it, ??? why whould they do that?

Why can we hear some voices speaking into the cockpit, just when noise from outside should be so loud that nothing could be said ?
This video is a trailer, taken from NASASpaceflight dot com - where the full 2hr 355mb version is on their excellent L2 section. The person who uploaded this to youtube failed to mention that fact.
