A Wake Up Call for America 9/11/11 - Dr. Tim Sims - Bethel Baptist Church

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion and sound the alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand. Joel 2:1.

Today marks the tenth year commemoration of one of the worst events our country has ever encountered, the 9-11 terrorist attack upon the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. I remember that day well. I was driving my three elementary age children to school when I turned on Moody radio and heard Joseph Stowell praying. At first his words seemed unreal or something from the past. I soon realized that America was under attack. Not knowing every detail, my heart trembled within my chest and my stomach immediately began to be troubled. When I arrived back home I began to watch cable news programs to see what was happening. I felt grieved and almost ill as the information and speculations began to flood the news programs. I prayed and called out to God to help America. I called my wife to tell her how much I loved her and to see if she knew and was okay. I began to organize a prayer service for our church later that evening. I remember seeing American flags appear everywhere and God Bless America banners being posted throughout the country. The death toll was heart-wrenching and the visual images of photos and video clips were burned into my memory. It was a day I don't think I shall ever forget.
As the months passed all kinds of information began to come out. There was finger pointing in many directions as to who was to blame and the question, how could this happen to America? A Muslim jihad had been declared against America and Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda organization took responsibility for the travesty. Many conspiracy theories arose and with questions still unanswered a 9-11 Commission was ordered to help bring those answers to the American people.
Where was God in all of this and why did He allow it to happen? These were some of the questions that arose. Some believe it was a wake-up call for America spiritually and others scoffed at the notion. I want to examine this in the light of Scripture and ask you to think beyond political correctness, beyond blame and conspiracy, to see a Sovereign God at work in the affairs of humanity as I preach today, A Wake-Up Call for America! It has been ten years and God is still speaking. Can you hear Him?
