@tag180rotax well he must have lied because I saw NIN perform this live in 2008. I have the video to prove it on my channel. Cash died in 2003. I heard the same rumor tho, most rumors are bullshit.

It's hard to believe this is actually the original version... Johnny Cash really poured all his heart and soul - as well as anguish and regret - into his cover. (I'm one of those who heard the cover first) Nevertheless I praise Trent for the lyrical masterpiece that is Hurt.
