I really appreciate your demos banjobum. If you don't mind... what banjo (in the $1000 or less range approx) would you recommend for someone just beginning the banjo but who is an experienced musician having played guitar and piano for 20+ years? Thanks!!

I play a walnut Staghorn (s/n 3468) and this baby really honks! She's a looker with killer tone. Has the bark of a good flathead and the bite of a good archtop. Without a doubt, the most responsive and loudest flathead I ever played. Definitely in a league of its own.

This staghorn sounds the best of all i heard. I also play a staghorn, I don't think most banjos have anything for a stelling

The banjos that I like best in these video series are the ones that haven't got capos on. They all sound great though!

I like this Staghorn best.
If I were looking for a banjo in the $1000.00 range, I'd look at one of the Recording King banjos. You can buy a Recording King RK-80 (mahogany w/ nickel plating) for right at $1000.00 and with a good setup, it will perform as well as a banjo twice the price. Another good option would be a Gold Star GF-85 which is right under $900.00. Both are excellent banjos regardless of the price.

I still live the 75 best, but the Staghorn has a punch and growl that I haven't heard on any other model of the maker. It is sure good, and the walnut definitely plays a huge part in that. I just wish Alan Munde still played his Staghorn again. The Crusader does not compare to the tone of this puppy!

Thanks for the compliments! I agree about the sound of this Staghorn, but in my opinon a lot of what you're hearing is not only the instrument, but the right hand of the person playing and the setup. Stellings can be set up to have a deeper, richer sound, but the potential varies by banjo.
