In June of 1998 Milwaukee Road 261 was to make excursions to the Galesburg Ill. Railroad Days fair. On Saturday contaminated grease on the main bearings caused them to substitute an SD9 for power back to Chicago. On Sunday the diesel towed the train back to Galesburg where #261 powered it back.
Unfortunately word did not get around fast and this is the result. Dozens of railfans watched the SD9 power it back. Looking at all the different colors of the cars it almost looks like a train from the early years of Amtrak.
OMGGGGG the Galesburg Death Run!!!!! My first extended excursion on the 261 (Chicago to Galesburg to WI and Mn) at age 8. (my dad was working customer relations in the cars, I was the cute little girl selling cab ride raffle tickets) Thankfully my uncle lives in Moline, so I crashed there for the night while my poor dad dealt with the repercussions of bad grease, aka unhappy passengers... it was almost like riding Amtrak! :-p
