This is a project we did on one of the most amazing buildings in Berlin, the former GDR's governmental "Palast der Republik". One is taken on a visit to the buildings past - present and finally - insane future.
Unfortunately, the building has been taken down almost completely.

  • How many square feet (or meters) did the Palast der Republik have?

I walked past it on a visit to East Berlin in 1988. I should have followed my sense of curiosity and walked across the street and had a look inside. Missed my chance. Instead, I went up the dumb Fernsehturm. The Palast would have been much more interesting.

    noch so ein nostalgiker...

  • EBAY

  • und zwar auch aus gutem grund!

  • @ Hingis: the problem is our capitalistic government, here in germany. chancellor merkel and the others of her party do the best they can to erase the east-german history. for example: it still exists only one plaque, on which the former head of state of east-germany (erich honecker) is mentioned. the party of chancellor merkel requested to mill out the mention of its name.

they have fear of a renewed revolution, like in 1989.

  • The building contained Asbest. It had been cleaned from Asbest after 1990, but in early 00's, more asbest was found. Therefore, the Palast was no more. However, the Schloss will also be for the People of Germany from what I've read. Probably a lot more than the Palast would have been. With all due Respect.

  • Lousy music.

  • This document will be used in a 100 years from now, when future generations decide to rebuild it!

  • they are going to rebuild the Berliner Schloss, which was torn down by the DDR in the 70s, on that spot.

  • This place should have been preserved as a museum, being a museum itself. In the world's democratic countries people do not get asked what they want most of the time. The descision to demolish certainly came from above, influenced by America & Co.
