DOES YOUR ERNIE BALL POWER PEG RUN TOO SLOW FOR YOUR NEEDS?

GUITARTEC REPAIR is a busy guitar repair shop so our tools really need to do their job, or they're simply ignored and never used. In theory, the Power Peg is a great idea for the home user, which is what it was obviousy designed for. But when it comes to using it in a busy shop, it simply doesn't cut it. It was never designed for this type of hard use, so we found that we never used it because it either had dead/dying batteries or it just turned too slow. Due to this, it was never in an arm's reach, so it sat in a drawer. We hope this hack will make us keep it out on our bench more.

WE ARE NOT DONE HACKING IT! We still want to make it rechargeable and we're thinking of wiring in a second 9 volt battery with a momentary switch for extra power when needed, like when winding up hard-to-turn tuners or classical guitar tuners where you need the extra speed. We're pretty sure this will destroy the gears in the transmission. Let's go for it!

Hey PLANET WAVES.... Why don't you expand on Ernie Ball's idea, since they won't.

  • Not sure you saw my 2nd video where i hacked a second 9volt into it and a lo/hi switch. The two batteries last MUCH longer than the single 9volt or the 4 AA's.

I know everyone knows this, but alkaline batteries really make a huge difference. We had some "heavy duty" non-alkaline 9volts laying around so we tried them. They sucked! Good luck with your hack!

  • Great vid, thanks. I did this to a Powerpeg I just got for $15. I soldered a new 9v clip directly to the switch instead of splicing wires. Also removed the plastic ridges inside both sides of the handles so the 9v fits inside while still using the original battery hatch and has plenty of wire to get the battery out. How long does your battery last?
