We had an encounter with a killdeer mom who chose a very bad place for her nest-- in the middle of an area where tractors and bulldozers drive-- so we had to flag the nest. She was NOT happy. We came back later and put large cones around the area so the eggs don't get crushed.
Killdeer pretend to have hurt wings to lure predators away from their nests, which is why she's flopping around so much.
Something about getting close to a killdeer that is un-nerving, they are so loud and flamboyant. They used to scare me when I was a little kid haha

Had one in front of the school and she stood her ground over her 3 little eggs until my finger was literally about 2 inches from her beak then flew in my face. XD The dad was over flipping on the ground a couple feet away.
