This can occur even later in the relationship when they've lulled their partners into a state of trust..so it's all very calculating and deceptive...those people groom their victims like predators so it's more than just physical abuse. It's psychological, verbal and the scars are deeper than just what's visible on the outside. This issue a case by case analysis but it's also an example of where our values are.

I just want to cry, I seriously just called the police on my neighbors about an hour or so ago. You can hearing them across the street but I'm the only on who called. They went from screaming that everyone could hear to dead silent, still worried because I'm not sure if the police found out who they were.

Powerful message, but in all honesty it is not the duty of the people living next to them to stand up for that person. That said I would like to live in a society where people do in fact stand up to someone who does that. I have put myself in the situation where I have had to stand between a man that hit a woman and stare him down. If you knew me you would know I am more of a flight than a fight person... It is not easy to get yourself in the middle of that situation.
