Does anyone know where to find more information about this advert?

@tinylove1979 The Samaritans advertising (including this very video!) usually suggests that they are for suicidal people. I think (as I said in my comment!) that it'sgreat for people to be able to talk about their problems. It's just that they shouldn't imply they can help people with serious mental health problems. There IS a massive difference between Samaritans + therapists but they + their advertising don't make that clear.

Samaritans are irresponsible?
What, for offereing people a chance to talk about their problems in confidence?
Sams does not claim to be offering "proper therapy" to the mentally ill - they are not claiming to be"proper therapists" they are VOLUNTEERS who are trained in listening skills.
There is a difference. A massive difference.

I have both been suicidal + studied psychology + I think it's really irresponsible for the Samaritans to claim they can help people with problems that serious just with basic listening counselling. Giving people a chance to express feelings + talk about their problems openly is great. But suicidal + mentally ill people need proper therapy.

thats my brother in this vid i cant believe i found it!

I've contacted the Samaritans before about something which charities like Childline WOULD pass on. However, the Samaritans didn't. They are confidential.

Unfortunately people lie and Reality is very different to what the organisation would like to portray but thats the World for you I guess.

Yes, the volunteer will wait until there is no further sounds for a period, up to their own discretion, then and hang up.

So assuming "Sophie" is mentally ill and has just taken one big overdose and she rings The Samaritans as she "Crosses Over" as she does not want to be lonely they will listen to her ramblings as the drugs take effect and the Samaritan Volunteer will just hang up the phone end of the matter.......
God Bless to anyone who volunteers as a Samaritan. You truly are great people.

Yes people lie. Samaritans as an organisation is aware of that, and it's not about weedling out liars and cheats. I'm not sure what you mean by reality being a very different one to what the organisation would like to portray - Samaritans is not trying to portray reality as anything - your world is probably totally different to mine, etc. and so it goes on. Samaritan volunteers are there to listen - that's it - and it really helps a lot of people get through some very dark times.
