We found this wasp carrying a spider back to it's nest in the front yard. This is the second time I've found this happening and decided to video it for more to see.

"Some species bite off the spider's legs to make it easier to drag and may drink blood that leaks from the wounds. The spider wasp places a single spider in each nest, which is often constructed after catching the prey. Some species specialize on trap-door spiders and tarantulas, using the spider's own burrow for a nest. The wasp lays an egg on the paralyzed spider, which is eventually eaten by the wasp's larva."

  • The spider isn't dead...it's been paralyzed by the wasp. The wasp is taking it to her nest to lay her eggs and the eggs live off the spider. Trapdoor spiders do the same thing.

  • I've been stung by these things five times over the years (I hike a lot) and let me tell you, it's no joke. It feels like you've been shot or stabbed and the pain lasts for a week. Each time it gets worse, and by the fifth I had to call in sick. The only reason I can think of why they'd want to sting me is that I may not have seen them with their prey and stepped on or near it enough to piss them off. Late summer and early fall is when they're active and I've learned to watch out then. Ouch.

  • She's not going to eat it, she's going to lay her egg in it, the larvae feed on the body!

  • why the **** didn't you help him???

  • The first time I saw a wasp doing this he was carrying the spider straight up the very high back of my house. I thought it was crazy! I did not know this was a regular occurrence until just now. SO cool!

  • and haha your commentary is awesome when the beatle comes back :D

  • thats cool, we dont have these in alaska, along with every other cool insect, so its cool to see stuff liek this.

  • looks like Tachypompilus unicolor... hard to be sure.

  • you're so amazing for putting this up

  • yes that's because your a reatard that has no respect for other life and who doesn't realise without simple creatures like spiders and wasps maintaining the food chain, you would probably cease to exist..
