A Greek shipping executive has launched a legal bid to seize Nigerian state assets after one of his oil tankers disappeared in the dangerous Niger Delta.
The executive has accused the Nigerian army and navy of collaborating with rebel pirates operating in the region.
The Nigerian military claims the vessel was impounded because it was trading in stolen oil.
From the main Greek port of Piraeus, Malcolm Brabant reports

I used to work for Zissimatos in Piraeus at Adriatic Tankers. I was in the chartering dept. This guy is a big time crook and he bankrupted that shipping company. Every day we had to work with brokers around the world threatening to stop doing business with us for outstanding accounts and non payment. Luckily I got out of there before he stopped paying his employees.

In the early 90's this guy robbed all those he had dealings with. Crew were neither paid, fed, repatriated etc. there were almost 100 of his ships arrested by creditors around the world. He was convicted to a jail term by the Greek courts (later buying his way out). A couple of years ago one of his Russian Captains was jailed in Nigeria for oil smuggling (it was claimed under Zizzimatos' instuctions). This guy is at the very crooked end of crooked and everyone in the shipping world knows it.

Sieze Nigeria's state assets? You've got nerve! You were already shipping away Nigeria's state assets for peanuts. You ship away oil from a region whose indigenes have lost their fishing grounds as a result of oil spills, and you talk about siezing Nigeria's state assets? You bloody, thieving hypocrite.
