Well stated. Succinct. This guy's a loon himself. "Dunces" is a book brimming with hope. Toole's self-destruction was rooted in much more than manuscript rejection and a sexual identity crisis. I visited his mother, Thelma, and corresponded with her. Let's just say she made Blanche du Bois appear saintly. Her insistence of getting her son's book published may have been motivated by 32 years of simmering guilt from raising a anti-Semetic genius who blamed the world for his own dysfunctions.
