alot of westerners mistake the state of Zen as something of a trance.

It is far from this. Completely opposite. Trance is a hypnosis state where emotions take over and you live in the ' moment' for a brief moment. Zen is putting aside the mind and just being your normal self. forgetting. It is like going into the woods, sitting next to a pond and watching the fishes and realizing the natural of everything. it is just what it is.
