  • @melbourneopera Who says nationalism is a prereq for industrialization?

  • @merdekaataumati1949 China may have been more industrialized but it's important to keep in mind that China was undergoing a major revolution/civil war which the Japanese exploited.

  • How could Germany (Prussia at that time) have such industrial Level which was higher than Britain in 1750 since it was not a united state not until the Bismarck came in 1841.

  • In 1895, Japan won against China (First Sino-Japanese War).

And Japan got Taiwa and Liaodong Peninsula.

Korea got the first independence from China.

But this graph shows Japan 2.4, China 6.2.

It tells us that the man who made this movie is not good at history.

  • Bairoch's early figures (used here) need to be taken with a pinch of salt: China's overstated at the beginning, while India's 19th-century deindustrialisation (though very real) was far less catastrophic than the chart suggests.

And note that we're just seeing shares of a world total that's grown more than 100-fold in the past 200 years: China's 5% in 1980 was already ten times bigger than its stated third in 1800. Now of course it's a whole lot bigger again.

  • you forgot south africa, turkey, italy, spain, canada and australia an which industrialized before china and india for its size.

  • you forgot south africa & turkey which industrialized before china and india for its size.

  • What does TRANSITION of GDP mean as opposed to only GDP?
