By Kiel Porter and Suma Bhullar: LARGE queues flocked to Woolworths stores in Stoke-on-Trent and Hanley today as people tried to grab a Christmas bargain in the chain's closing down sales.
Administrators Deloitte released a statement late yesterday that they believed the most effective way to move the chain's stock was through aggressive cost cutting.
The Government today said it would "give every help possible" to the staff of the failing retailer.
Commons Leader Harriet Harman said it was "very devastating news" for shop staff just before Christmas, many of whom had worked there for "many many years," but that Jobcentres would be on hand to make sure former staff were "pointed in the right direction" for training and vacancies.
"We certainly don't expect to stand by and just simply say unemployment is a price worth paying, they can get on their bike - we will give them every help possible," she added.
we just don't know!
