Hunter Mill Updates - Sustainable Reston Forum

What comes to mind when you hear the word, "sustainability?" Hello, I am Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins here to tell you about an opportunity to explore what that word means for our community and for your household.

I invite you to join me at the Sustainable Reston Forum, where you can learn how to take part in projects that will help Reston be a sustainable community for the next 50 years. You will hear from keynote speaker Michael Schuman who has worked around the world to create sustainable, local economies.
You will receive ideas from experts and learn 12 easy things your household can do to be sustainable.

In fact, you will have the opportunity to sign a pledge for your household to make simple changes that will keep you involved in the Sustainable Reston vision.

At Founder's Day in April, we will determine how successful we are as a community by tallying the number of these pledge cards have been signed.

For the last year, a task force of your friends and neighbors has been working on this idea of Sustainable Reston. They began by asking the question I asked of you in the beginning. What does sustainable mean?

Although the definition can be broad, this group narrowed the focus to four areas:
• Transportation
• Home and Lifestyle
• Environment
• Buying Local

The Sustainable Reston Forum is just the first event in a multi-year campaign to continue the principles upon which Reston was founded -- and to ensure our community is as vibrant 50 years from now as it is today.

The Sustainable Reston Forum is Saturday, October 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods. Please register online at restoncommunitycenter.org.
