A quick test to show that the new iPhone 4S can track the Russian Glonass navigation system. We are simulating a trip around Taipei city using the LabSat GPS+Glonass simulator. We have turned off GPS and are replaying only in Glonass mode. We have also connected up a VBOX 3i which tracks both GPS and Glonass to show that no GPS satellites are being transmitted. It works very well with Glonass only, and this should help the iPhone 4S to work out a more accurate location in areas where you don't normally get very good GPS reception. It can't be long before all GPS receivers use Glonass as there is a good number of satellites now visible from anywhere in the world.

  • It uses both GPS and GLONASS whenever it can.

  • If you're simulating it from Taipei, does that mean the GLONASS support will be available world wide with the new iPhone 4S?

Im saying this because only apple's US page specifies this iPhone 4S's ability - not the other non-USA sites.

  • @exnither I am guessing it will be available everywhere as it definately picks up Glonass in the UK, but doesn't appear in the specs on the UK website.

"Now in usual city conditions navigation will work not off and on, and always, worldwide! It is a quantum leap", - the expert of company STMicroelectronics speaks

According to its results, in the conditions of city building (buildings close the sky to 25 degrees from a horizon line) navigation is provided less than 18 hours a day at use only GPS and 24 hours a day - at use ГЛОНАСС!

  • Есть глонасс. Это гуд!

  • What will happen, if you simulate both, GPS- and GLONASS-Signals. (e.g. 2 GPS- and 2 GLONASS-Satellites)... will it use both systems or only the one with the best signal to keep a better battery consumption?

  • Ok, thanks a lot @jools360! ;)
