Woyzeck: an expressionist drama with no words

Among Nadjs pieces, Woyzeck or The Hint of Vertigo is the only one which vertige is explicitly based on a drama text, a play which Büchner left in four different incomplete versions when he died in 1837. A poor soldier, Woyzeck, is driven by jealousy to stab his mistress, Maria. Madness and murder ensue as a result of his gradual dehumanisation under the enormous pressure of exploitation by a class in power, who advocate that morality is associated with economic prosperity. Nadj proposes his own, unspoken, condensed version of the complete work, staging a choreography of a fragmented narrative bent on decoupling and paradox. Emptied of text, it brings to light the questions posed by the author regarding human nature and destiny. Nadjs Woyzeck exudes madness and pain. Bizarre creatures, resembling to clay figurines, interpret a painful and raw, expressionist drama without words to a melancholy soundtrack reminiscent of the musical accompaniment of a Balkan silent film.
