This tribute video goes out to the defunct clubs of the Australian Rules VFL/AFL 110 year history.

University 1908 to 1914.
Their first few seasons in the VFL showed some prommise but they never reached the finals.
But from 1911 to 1914, University went on a downward spiral that would see them only winning two games in their last 4 seasons.

Because of the Great War braking out, the University club was the first casulty of the VFL's history with many of their players being killed while serving Australia in World War 1.

South Melbourne 1897 to 1981.
The South Melbourne Swans won 3 premireships, the last being 1933.
But due to poor on field performance South Melbourne struggled even while having great players like Bob Skillton winning Brownlow Meadles during those tough times in the 60's and 70's.

In 1981, South Melbourne moved to Sydney to become the first club in the VFL to be formed outside Victoria in 1982.
Even though they are now the Sydney Swans, there is a loyal South Melbourne base in the state of Victoria.

So far the Sydney Swans have won 1 Grand Final in 2005 but have also came runners up in 1996 and 2006.

Fitzroy Lions 1897 to 1996
Frizroy was a strong club during it's early years in the VFL winning 8 premireships with the last one being in 1944.

Sadly just like South Melbourne, Fitzroy suffered from poor onfield performance during the 60's and 70's but still survived till the 1990's.

In 1996 when Fitzroy was virtually bankrupt, the Lions merged with the Brisbane Bears to become known as the Brisbane Lions.

Brisbane Bears 1987 to 1996
Brisbane was a club based in the state of Queensland and was one of two clubs introduced in that year (the other club being West Coast)

Early on the Bears Struggled and almost ended up being bankrupt during the early 90's.

But they struggled on both on field and off field until 1994 when they finally started to get their winning form together and in 1995 when the Brisbane Bears sparked a come back at mid season to end up making the finals for the first time winning 6 out of their last 7 games to just make the finals by 1/2 a game.

The following year in 1996 the Bears enjoyed their best season finishing 3rd on the ladder and enjoying a few finals wins before being defeated by North Melbourne who then went on to win the Grand Final the following week against Sydney Swans.

Midway in the 1996 season, the Brisbane Bears organised to merge with Fitzroy who was struggling to find a club to merge with them and as the marridge between the Bears and the Lions became official at the end of the 1996 season, the Bears became the Brisbane Lions.

So far the Brisbane Lions have won 3 premireships between 2001 to 2003 and came runners up in 2004.

  • can I ask where you got these pictures, university interest me but there seems to be little to know literature other than wikipedia and the 100yrs of Australian football book which contains very little.

  • I got these pics from a internet site on Australian rules football that is fullpointsfooty (dot) com

And the university jumper from footyjumpers (dot) com.

I did not have a scanner at the time of doing this vid so I was not able to get the University pics from any of the footy books like the 100 years of (VFL/AFL) Football made in 1996 or the Clubs book made in 1998.

As I remember, the Clubs book has got an entire page of the history of the University's short 7 year history.

  • wots the name of the song

  • Canon by Parkabell

  • My dad Alan(Skeeta)Welch played for South Melbourne back in the 30's and was a member of the 1933 squad, playing in the semi-final where he broke his ankle and so sat on the bench for the victorious final of 1933. He played next to legendry players such a Bob Pratt.

A South Melbourne diehard did he sadly died in 1969.(I think he would be horrified to know the are now the SYDNEY swans).

If anyone knows of any footage of the Swans from back in the 30's, let me know. Jane

  • The only footage I know is from the DVD/Video 100 years of Australian Football that has some footage of the old South Melbourne days of the 30s.

You might also want to check another Video/DVD that had the early footage of Astralian Rules Football

  • South Melbourne aren't gone their Sydney. Same club changed their name.

  • as only being 15 atm i didn't know much about Fitzroy lions & always wanted to know what my local footy teams song was based on!

i found out that it was based on the long gone Fitzroy , as i didnt know much i started researching about the lions & am discusted in the AFL & how they have bullied Fitzroy & i can see the same thing happening in the next 10 years to my belovered kangaroos :(

    LONG LIVE FITZROY <3

  • @ausmies Brisbane Lions need Fiztroy Culture now more than ever. Watching with 13,000 other fans in the 2nd last game was no different to some of the darkest Fitzroy days. Good to see Brisbane Lions recognising the 8 premierships and recently they posted info on Bernie Quinlan being the only player from the 3 associated clubs to have kicked 100 goals in a season. Put on different Fitzroy strips from era's when playing in Melbourne and watch the supporters come back.

  • Roger Merret you legend.

  • South Melbourne never died.... there are no minutes in any of there meetings that refers to them as ended, they relocated to Sydney and changed there name, Footscray moved and changed it's name to the Western Bulldogs are they dead?

the only clubs that have ended are University and Fitzroy.

  • The one person who disliked this video must be a Brisbane Lions supporter.

  • but south melbourne are still in the afl under the Sydney Swans

  • next defunct teams will be GWS,GCFC, and swans

  • @frankmat
