After three miscarriages, Jill was concerned about her ability to carry a child to term. Under the care of Dr. John Schnorr at Southeastern Fertility Center in Charleston, South Carolina, Jill learned she had a condition known as recurrent pregnancy loss. Her testing plan included PGD, or preimplantation genetic diagnosis. PGD is able to detect an aberration in a woman's DNA that may not allow some of her eggs to survive after fertilization. Treatment for recurrent pregnancy loss caused by this chromosomal abnormality consists of in vitro fertilization, where the eggs are fertilized, checked for the presence of properly functioning DNA, then placed into the uterus, where normal implantation and pregnancy can occur.
