Trying something new here - I wrote some new music yesterday and in the absence of new lyrics I sung words from a poem by Emily Dickinson (B. 1830 - D. 1886). The poem is called 'Indian Summer' and I've read varied explanations of the poem, but ultimately I reckon it is about the inevitable changing of the seasons. The poems goes like this:
These are the days when birds come back,
A very few, a bird or two,
To take a backward look.
These are the days when skies resume
The old, old sophistries of June, -
A blue and gold mistake.
Oh, fraud that cannot cheat the bee,
Almost thy plausibility
Induces my belief,
Till ranks of seeds their witness bear,
And softly through the altered air
Hurries a timid leaf!
Oh, sacrament of summer days,
Oh, last communion in the haze,
Permit your child to join,
Thy sacred emblems to partake,
Thy consecrated bread to break,
Taste thine immortal wine!

I don't think I'm breaching any copyrights by using the words from this poem in song. Anyway, lots of my favourite bands and muso's seem to borrow phrases from (or are at least heavily influenced by) the old poets anyway (eg. think nick drake, van morrison, fleet foxes, midlake, bon iver, the tea party etc).
I looked up Emily Dickinson on youtube and found out the Carla Bruni released an album with songs that put old poems to music including some by Emily Dickinson and Yeats etc.. So I guess its been done before! Oh well, here is my attempt!
Fantastic! The music reminds me of Mimicking Birds.
