ZHANG:
Torrential rains have turned India's southern state of Tamil Nadu into an island. Heavy rains triggered by an approaching cyclone towards the southern coast have brought chaos to the state capital Chennai and surrounding regions. Let's take a look.

STORY:
Cyclonic rain has lashed the region for three days and looks to continue. It has claimed 28 lives and turned a huge strip of farmland and villages into islands.

The army has been called in to lead rescue operations and to airdrop packages.

The Meteorological Department of Chennai says north and south Tamil Nadu is likely to receive more heavy rainfall.

[Ramanan, Meteorological Department of Chennai]:
"As far as the forecast of the next 24 hours is concerned it is likely to rain in most of the places over north Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. One or two places will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. As far as south Tamil Nadu is concerned it will rain at many places and one or two places may receive heavy rainfall."

The district administration of all the affected areas is on high alert. The District Collectors have asked the Public Works and Revenue Department staff to remain on high alert round the clock to handle any emergency. Meanwhile, patrols around the coastal area have been intensified.
