'Laments' is the first material I hear of and listen to by this Chilean band that really caught my attention. Chilean doom metal scene is very prolific and of good quality; Poema Arcanus and Mar de Grises are just two examples to support the above statement. I am not really fond of doom metal myself, but this album can immerse the listener into what we could call cold dark waters of tranquillity, peace, sorrow and loneliness. The tempo is always slow, which is actually not a big issue considering the band gendre. The vocals in this release are very low pitched and gutural. By low pitched, I'm really making a point because even clear vocals often reach tunes so low that could fit in the basso profondo registration. However, at some attempts to play harsh vocals, Caudal totally alteres the mood of the songs, since they simply do not fit properly to the mood imposed by the constant and longlasting arpeggii done on a classical guitar, which will prevail through the whole release as the most present and notorious instrument.
The tunes are melancholic as expected, but sometimes lacking of interesting changes. Although they are mostly played in major scales and tunes, they are able to create a dark colonial athmosphere akin to the region the band is from. However, their genre is labelled as folk/doom metal, and it is not much of a 'folkish' band, besides the classic guitar.
Summarizing, this is a very good release, well tuned, well balanced in the few changes it produces through its songs; lacking of some elements, and with some others unnecesarily added; after all, that's what makes bands and genres differ one from another.
