This song was written by Bessie Smith for my great uncle, Charles Green. He wasn't from "way down south". He was born in Omaha, Nebraska. My grandmother is his older sister. He died of tuberculosis in New York on November 27, 1935. My mother is his closest living relative. Thank you for posting this song.

god bless you for posting this I was about 14 ..1960 when I first heard this and discovered bessie a whole group of us young teens wore this record out it brings back such memories thanks we had and old victorola player with windup handle.

lovely sound quality recording what year was that recorded and is it from a 78 or a 33rpm?

Recorded 1927 (See my notes on the right) and taken from a 331/3 L.P. -but cleaned up a little using 'Audacity' software.

Small point - Fletcher Henderson died 1952.
Love the music! I must find my Bessie Smith LP.
