Jazz, Period. - Tango
Composed by Kevin Dean

In this installment of Jazz, Period., we revisit Kevin Dean and Al McLean in one of the finest acoustical spaces in Montreal, the Mount Royal United Church. They are joined by pianist Marie-Fatima Rudolf, who brings the rumbling, jaunty tango to life with her delicate, yet brooding touch.

In this recording, Dean and McLean both play unusual period instruments that are not their own; Dean a rare 1947 Olds Super Recording trumpet, and McLean an equally rare Martin Handcraft Master, or 'Typewriter' model alto sax. The Typewriter moniker can be attributed to the instrument's full set of round pearl key touches, resembling the keywork of a mechanical typewriter.

Kevin Dean is professor, and a founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/).

  • @RatPfink66

Thanks RatPhink66. I'm happy you think so. I know how hard it is to let go of a loved possession! I rebuilt this horn with great care and respect.

  • I am the former owner of the gold Martin alto sax Al plays here. It's passed to good hands!

  • Absolutely beautiful as usual guys! I've got a question for you, did Kevin like the Super Recording? I play an Olds Recording myself and I love it, but I haven't played a super recording yet. It sounded wonderful, but he sounds great on any horn as he's proven many times! Keep up the awesome vids and happy holidays.

  • this is so hip! Thanks for the post!

  • Way to go guys! (and gal!)
