Maxwell's re-entry into the game was based on an album that totally went against the grain of the industry. After a seven year hiatus during which he proffered no new music; basically fell off the edge of the world; he wrote & produced a pure R&B/Soul album with LIVE instrumentation and no featured artists. In an age of commercialized Hip Hop, Pop & so-called R&B that was MONUMENTALLY brave and bold.
Give props because he pretty much resuscitated a genre that was on life support.

I don't understand why some fans want to hear their favorite artist put out the same sound album after album! I LOVE BLACK! I think this is one of his best pieces of work to date from lyrics/content, instrumentation - EVERYTHING!!! This is his most vulnerable album yet in my opinion. He's evolved, he's showing a different side of him besides pure sex and lust! There is more to relationships and Maxwell is showing that with this Black album. KUDOS TO HIM! I'm one fan who totally gets it!!

@allheavens I really think 'reinventing' to be an overstatement. He may be reintroducing elements of it but surely not reinventing. I'm okay with agreeing to disagree! I'm looking forward to hearing some more new material. While Pretty Wings, Bad Habits (that organ!!! DAMN!) and Playing Possum really hit me, the rest of the record kind of just went by the way side. However, I just want add that Playing Possum is a bad joint! That song is so strange eccentric and beautiful - reminds me of Prince!

@Replenica I do know all of Max's b-sides and rarities. Yes, he is rebranding the name but also his music. BLACK is a very stripped down album and it reminds me of the soul genre during the sixties. He is reinventing that genre, with a little more up tempo instrumentation and urban vibe. You love Embrya and it is brilliant. I consider it to be pure undiluted desire but BLACK is the more emotionally raw album. You might think it is "soft" but we will have to agree to disagree on that point.
