The illustrator Steve Brodner draws the candidates and their powerful but troublesome ties: Geraldine Ferraro, the Rev. John Hagee, and Jeremiah Wright. From a series of short videos directed by Gail Levin, with animation by Asterisk. See more at http://www.newyorker.com/online/nakedcampaign/videos

  • The Clintons have as much to do with the situation we're in as Cheney, Bush and the neocons.

    1. Your government has to stop shooting innocent people... admit the lie and stop making war!

    2. Stop spying on each other! You have the best constitution in history and you're allowing your leader to use it for ass-wipe.

    3. Stop over-consuming... you're fucking up the planet at a major pace and we don't have anywhere else to go yet.

    Thank you!

  • Generally, America promotes the illusion of political integrity so effortlessly. The world on the other hand sees it all from an entirely different view... as in, "Where are the high Christian values being exhibited as a shining example of the finest that America can offer to humanity?" And you folks last came up with George W. Bush...

Pay attention folks!!! It's getting seriously fucked up out here in the real world!

    cont'd...

  • Paul and Nader are choices at this point.

You are right that Paul will probably no longer be a choice after the GOP convention, but he still is until then.

I also agree that the odds of either of these guys winning the presidency are vanishingly small, but they are still choices.

The artist chose to ignore these two candidates. I wish he hadn't. Furthermore the media effectively squeezes out candidates like Paul and Nader, using the same kind of argument you are using.

  • If you think Paul or Nader have a bearing on the content of this video, we failed to be clear in its point.

The subject of this piece has nothing to do with either -even if they were in the running.

Paul has said that he won't bolt the Reps. Unless he flips on his position or spearheads a putsch -he's out. Nader has run several times with diminishing support and 3.5% of the population won't get him in.

This is about the handicaps of these 3 people, not everyone on the ballot.

  • No, the media tends to disparage and discount third party and minority candidates, in effect attempting to decide for the people who is worthy of news coverage and worthy of consideration.

Ron Paul IS on the primary ballot, and is still running, but he is NOT featured in this video.

My point is just that both he and Ralph Nader should have been included, and probably could have been the source of really good cartoons. This artist is quite accomplished.

  • "that doesn't mean there aren't compelling (reasons) for people to support him"

Can you please give me one? Please?

"Republic exists to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority"

Exactly! Just because 10 million sheeple voted for McCain in the Primaries does not mean he is the Republican Nominee, at least not yet - maybe after Sept.

I will wait and watch. The President is just a figurehead anyway. The people surrounding the President, the cabinet, and the Vice President nowadays (more than ever) will certainly affect my decision.

I am reading now about the Constitution Party with Alan Keyes, and John Corsi, and maybe Ron Paul. I will read about the Save America summit next I think.

  • Oh, and "republic" and "democracy" are not antonyms nor exclusive terms.

  • There are plenty of reasons. You don't agree with McCain, that doesn't mean there aren't compelling for people to support him.

I'm not sure why your trying to give a primer on Civics- that has nothing to do with anything.

As a Republic, the government is a synthesis of varying points of view -most of which we won't agree with. Ultimately, as Plato says the Republic exists to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority and as Jefferson said if you win by one vote, you win absolutely.

  • The US is a Constitutional Republic(Not a Democracy) - the primary vote is a popularity contest - it has very little real meaning, other than some states bind their delegates to the primary vote. This delegate system helps prevent 6 corporate media companies from controling every election. The uninformed sheeple will vote, but most will not try to become involved and become delegates - I have yet to hear of one reason to vote for McCain over Paul!
