I did a story recently on Steve McNair Jr. He is a Senior at Oak Grove
High School and a signee of the 2010 USM Football recruiting class.
His father Steve McNair Sr. was a Pro Bowl quarterback for the Titans
and Ravens in the NFL. He attended Alcorn St. and was drafted in the
first round by the Titans. He is most notably remembered for playing
in the Super Bowl between the Titans and Rams, coming up one yard
short of winning the game. Unlike his father, Junior plays wide
receiver. In seventh grade he made the switch from quarterback to wide
receiver. He learned a lot about the game from his father and studying
the techniques of NFL greats Larry Fitzgerald and Randy Moss. He
stands at 6'1 195 pounds and runs a 4.5 40' speed. On Rivals.com and
ESPN he was rated as a 3-star receiver. McNair Jr. has hopes of living
up to his father's legendary name and one day playing in the NFL. His
redshirt status is unsure of going into the 2010 football season. He
plans to major in Coaching at Southern Miss. He says that if a pro
football career doesn't work out, then he would like to be a coach in
basketball, baseball, or football. Due to the competition at his
position already on the Southern Miss roster, McNair Jr. could be seen
playing in the slot in Larry Fedora's offense. The feature wide-out on
the team is DeAndre Brown. But with Brown looking to go pro early
after his Junior campaign, McNair could see an increased role, which
could be a long-term sign of an immediate redshirt for the upcoming
season.
