Perhaps someday Maya's Paint Effects will work efficiently with Mental Ray, but for now the only solution is to convert you're paint effects strokes to Polygons if you want to use them with the Mental Ray Physical Sun and Sky. This tutorial by Stuart Christensen will help you with the process of converting Paint Effects Strokes to polygons and also give you a few quick tips on controlling the color of your Physical Sun and Sky. Easy stuff! Enjoy

  • on the render settings it suddenly dont show me the mental ray option what to do?

  • @TheGennaios Go to the Window - Settings/Preferences and choose Plug-in Manager and make sure the Mayatomr.bundle has a check mark in the Loaded and Auto load boxes. Hope that helps.

  • wow! thanks a lot for your help! your so good at this!! im only 15 and i dreamt of being an animator since i was a child. you really helped a lot! i was wondering if you had any tips?? ive been having trouble shaping my objects and trying to make a character! its so difficult right now!! and i was wondering what classes i should take in highschool to get in this buissness??

  • @cocopinguful The absolute best investment you can make if you want to do this is to buy one of the books on Maya. The Autodesk book called the Animation and Modeling Handbook is great if you want to do models/characters or any of the Mastering Maya books from Autodesk/Sybex. You will need any media related courses (photoshop/AfterEffects/Maya/3DS/FinalCut/Premiere/) and photography and video production courses! And most important.................Don't give up! This stuff ain't easy!

  • @cocopinguful i know your comment is 4 months old, but what helped me in learning maya and other 3d applications is investing in a membership of Digital Tutors. they have a descent handful of 7-hour long in depth training series. for highschool, just take art courses and BE INVOLVED, meaning getting your name out there by making posters or any media stuff for school event and club...etc.

last but not least, make a good portfolio for uni

  • @cocopinguful I start at your age! lol and im 17 now.. I've learn a lot, Don't give up!!

  • wow.. ive learned more on this than 1.2k dollar 10 week class.

  • @Ann199040 When using the PhysicalSun/Sky system you can't use a sphere around your scene and be inside the sphere. Generally the phys/sunsky system is assuming you are out in the open. If you are inside an object then you should use the portal light setup for that perspective.

  • @deepfriedectoplasm Yes, you are right, I just figure it out after I ask the question, and the reason why I can not see my shape is because I got a sphere shape backgound around my scene, and the sunlight can not get in...so basically, all of my objects are not visible...But what I still don't understand is eventhough I drag the sphere size bigger than the sunlight sphere, the sunlight still can not bright up the scene...only if I hide the sphere, the scene can be brighten up...

  • @Ann199040 Being able to see the sun shape depends entirely upon the camera angle and the position of the sun in the sky. Try rotating the sun direction so that it is somewhat horizontal with the ground plane and the camera angle is pointed into the sun angle. For shadows it's hard to tell, but make sure you enable final gathering in Mental Ray. Hope that helps.
