just a matter of materials - nowadays many parts in the industry or our daily life wouldn´t be doable let´s say 50 years ago without the invention of new materials but sure.. now? no. mayby in some years. Why not?

It wouldn't be efficient for a car to be able to move sideways. Omni directional wheels are too heavy, too many moving parts, and they wouldn't provide the same kind of transfer of power from engine to the road. This would be ideal for use in fork lifts instead where speed doesn't matter but maneuverability is key.
