This is something I originally did privately for some friends but I figured it may be useful to others, it describes how to do a different rhythm to the standard split stroke. Some people pick this up naturally, other need it pointing out - like me for example! This is a tip I got from a tape of the late Greg Croft, however I have expanded the explanation with more solos. By the way, the solo I'm referring to at the end is wigan boat express.

  • Peter I have revisited your very informative explanations of the Formby method.

They are so uplifting and rekindled my desire to revisit and learn again.

    Thank you so much.

    Tommy.

  • great upload..saw this on frank skinners formby tribute a few days ago.

  • that was so helpful thankgod for people like you

  • Interesting and definitely useful - thanks.

  • Great, love all the tips you give which are very informative.I've been trying the various techniques that yours and other sites show for 12 months but I'm not achieving anything musical.I can do the split, triple, shake etc. to some extent but not much else.Where am I going wrong? The guitar seems so much easier! Perhaps you could breakdown a complete solo sometime in the future and show each part.

P.S. Who was Greg Croft? Thanks.

  • Do you use different uke's or do you re-tune the one?

Also, the one I have is tuned in G but I find covering the A chord is difficult without catching the 1st string unless I use my thumb to make the A chord, would that be normal with these instruments? Thanks

  • I'll have to learn that :) Abbott sounds nice in C tuning to, are you keeping it as C?

  • Thanks for the lessons, very good, a lot of practice to do that I think:)

Do you know of any internet sites that have uke chord shapes & possibly Formby songs with chords?

    Thanks.
