Everything was blurry and Demi shook her head, trying to get rid of the spinning sensation. All in vain. Her throat felt funny and her neck seemed swollen and warm. Nevertheless, she could see the brothers finishing up their number. The duet would be next. Demi ran a hand through her tousled hair and stepped firmly on stage, mic in hand. "Only three more shows to go," she whispered to herself as she made her way toward the boys. "Three more."
She counted off the music beats and prepared to sing the first line. "I've always been the type of girl—"
Demi paused, wondering. Nick was looking at her, concern written on his face. The song was moving along, but it was leaving her behind. She tried again, but the words stuck to her throat. She belted them over and over in her mind, but they never made it to her lungs. She glanced about in desperation. "I can't speak!" she mouthed. Her face and neck suddenly felt so warm. She took a step toward Joe, who was at her side in an instant to break her fall.

"How is she? Will she live?" Joe sounded concerned.
Nick rolled his eyes cynically. "Look bro, she's just got a bad cold. And maybe strep throat. So she can't talk. BUT SHE'S NOT GOING TO DIE."
"Eventually," Joe muttered as he sank down into a seat beside Kevin.
"She's going to be fine," Kevin patted his shoulder reassuringly, with his other hand texting Danielle. Nick also sat down, and wearily glanced around the small waiting room.
"The doctor said she should be well enough to sing by next week. But he says she's not to talk. JOE."
Joe was up and pacing again. "What? What am I supposed to do?"
"Stay out of the room, don't talk to her, and don't make noise," suggested Kevin, always striving to be the wise brother.
Nick yawned and leaned his head against the wall, pulling his baseball cap over his eyes.
"Dude! How can you sleep at a time like this?!" Joe exploded, whipping of the cap.
"Dude. How can YOU not?" Nick sleepily looked at his watch. "It's almost five in the morning. We've been here all night. We are playing two shows tomorrow. Rather, today. So I suggest you either get some shut eye or borrow Kevin's red bull."
"No way!" Kevin clutched his can protectively.
Joe groaned, and tried to brush out the wrinkles of his sharp gold suit. "I just don't want her to die," he said sadly.
"I already told you—"
"Is it weird that I care more about her than a sister?"
"We don't have a sister," Kevin pointed out.
"And if we did," Nick added, "she'd knock some sense into you.
"Remember what dad said," Kevin gripped Joe's shoulder and solemnly recited their father's words.
"Keep your personal life private and your business life clean. Never blur the lines."
Just then, the door opened. Joe gave a start. A very sturdy nurse with a placid expression smiled tightly at them over her rimless glasses. "Joe?"
"That's me," Joe asserted breathlessly, with a nudge from Nick.
"Of course it is," nodded the nurse, with a look-over at his flashy suit. "Follow me."
"Your girlfriend can only whisper, so don't do anything to upset her or cause her to raise her voice."
"My—WHAT?" The nurse looked at him sharply as she pushed open the door and Joe saw her, propped against a plethora of pillows.
"Demi! Are you feeling ok? Can I get you anything?" She flashed him her thousand watt grin, only slightly dimmer than normal. "I'm fine," she mouthed. Joe furrowed his brow and hunkered down on the chair next to her. "You look pale."
Demi rolled her eyes. "I AM pale."
Joe swallowed. "Well, you had me—I mean US—worried there!"
Demi shook her head and tried to speak, but coughed instead.
She turned and grabbed the bedside pad of paper. After quickly scrawling a note, she handed it to Joe. He was about to read it when a very large nurse came bustling in.
"Hey Dems," whispered Joe, as he eyed the bulky nurse. "I just found a match for Big Rob."
"Demi suppressed a laugh which turned into a fit of coughs. The nurse turned at the sound and focused on Joe.
One glare and he was out the door.
It wasn't until he got back to the waiting room that Joe opened the note. It read:

Tell Nick to sing my solo tomorrow. Doc says I'll be w/o a voice for two days.
Kevin, you can tell my fans I just have a cold. I don't want them to worry.
And between you and me—Joe—thanks for visiting. You're like a bright goofball to brighten up my day. It may take me longer to recover because of you, but I don't mind.

Smiling to himself, Joe ripped off the bottom part of the note and handed the rest to Nick. Nick raised an eyebrow, having suspected what he had done.
