Sometimes, also, they're headed to the shops for servicing or repair. Every once in a while, there are units headed for scrap. I caught sight of this back in 2000 in Louisville. It was a parade of fallen flags and a couple of odd ones - 5 CR GPs; 1 CR switcher; 1 CSX 'Pumpkin' MOW unit (not one of the U-boats, but an old GP); 2 Chessie GPs (one with B&O on the cab); 1 SS GP.

Ok, so IF all loco's were online, the train would be 36,800 ft (6.97 miles) long. That's a pretty long train. Probably not legal, but pretty darn long.

@thesoulsekr Yeah, that's about right depending on the cargo being hauled. Not only would that be a world record for longest train ever, it would drive every motorist at a grade crossing nuts. Still would be pretty neat to see though!

I'm wondering how long the train could've been if all loco's were online and at full capacity.

The longest regular manifest (slop freight) train I've ever caught on this line was 9,200" in length with 9 engines. Only 3 of them were needed; the rest were dead in tow. I've never seen any train that needed this many engines to move.

Why did they need all that power? It was only an 89 car train. Could they have picked up or dropped off some cars? A LOT of cars?

This train frequently serves as a power move to get engines from Waycross to Atlanta and points northward. Q684 also does the same thing in sending needed power to Birmingham and Nashville. They used to run light engine sets by themselves, but that cost the company time and money for an extra crew.
