Selena shook her head, gasping in air. She wiped away the tears running down her cheeks. She couldn't take it anymore. She had to leave.
"Sel?" Her younger brother, Jake, walked into her room, "You okay?"
"No." She croaked, shaking her head, "No I'm not. We're not okay." She looked at him seriously, "This has to stop."
Jake locked the door behind him, sitting on his sister's bed, watching her grab whatever clothes she could grasp and cram into a bag furiously.
"Sel." Jake sighed, "Where the fuck do you think we can go? You're 16 for Christ's sake. Be realistic. We can't survive on our own."
"Oh yes we can." She laughed, wiping aside more tears as they slid down her cheek, "And besides, we don't have to do it alone."
"Dad's all we have." He stared at her, "I hate to say it, but dad is all we fucking have, Sel."
"That's not true." Sel stopped what she was doing, wiping more of her tears away, "That's not true Jake."
"You know what, you're right." Jake's eyebrows crunched up in realization, "You are all I have, Sel. So, just, please-" He croaked from the lump forming in his throat, "Don't do anything stupid."
Sel sighed, a small smile escaping her lips. She sat beside her 14 year old brother, brushing his hair away from his face and placing a kiss on his forehead. He leaned into her shoulder, shutting his eyes, which were now burning from the tears he was fighting back.
Muffled shouts of profanities were heard from outside Selena's bedroom door, followed by loud banging on the door itself.
"Quick, quick, go to your room." Selena stood up, hurrying to hide the evidence of her packing as Jake rushed to her balcony, "Be ready by 3 a.m. sharp."
"But where the fuck are we going?"
She smiled, "Just trust me."
Jake hesitated, before climbing over the railing on her balcony, into his, and rushing into his room. He then heard the loud slam of Selena's door, which he would've concluded to be their father.
He grabbed as much as he could fit into a backpack, a duffel bag and the smallest of his trolley luggage. Even after packing, he could still feel his heart pump against his chest. He sat on his bed, trying to control his heavy breathing, staring at the framed picture of his mom that sat on his side table.
"This is all your fault." He muttered, "If you'd never fucking died, none of this would've happened."
The two hours that Jake had to wait was pure agony. Tonight he had heard everything in more detail; The abuse and everything that came with it. The shouts, moaning, screams and cries from his sister- he knew how to block it all out, but for some reason, tonight, he just couldn't.
"Last night. Last night from this bullshit." He had to whisper to himself just to calm him down.
The sounds from his sister's room had gone silent after what felt like forever. But it still wasn't time. They had to wait for their dad to go to bed, and for Sel to finish packing.
As soon as the clock on his phone struck 3:00, he grabbed his bags and headed to his balcony.
"How're we getting down?" He asked Selena, who seemed to always have the answers.
"The Hollywood way. Grab your sheets and tie them together then to your bags."
Once they had lowered all their belongings, Jake jumped over onto Selena's terrace, and they began to climb down the thick pipe that ran down the side of their house.
It all seemed so fast, they exchanged no words getting there, but before they knew it, they were waiting for the next train to New York City.
"So," Jake looked at his sister, "What the fuck do you plan on doing once we get there? Be hobos in Central Park or something?"
"Haha, you're hilarious." Selena rolled her eyes, "I'm not that stupid."
"Well it's fucking typical, don't'cha think? New Jersey runaways, off to the big city?"
"Remember mom's best friend? Tia Carmen?"
"Yeah. Wasn't she our godmother or something?"
"She has a house up in Brooklyn, and I looked her up and called her the other night." Selena trailed off, staring at the train tracks in the distance.
"Sel, you-"
"Jake." She sighed, looking at her brother seriously, "I couldn't take it anymore." She placed her hand on his cheek, "You're all I have." She inhaled deeply, "It couldn't take seeing you get hurt anymore. It had to stop. I had to tell someone."
Jake gave her a small smile, "Thank you."
"I love you." She sighed, kissing his forehead.
"I love you too."
Whoa. This is so intense but so amazing. I am in love.
