"Im not really like this," Withers says to his opponent Death as he throws his photos down on the chess set. Das War Mal is the story of former childhood acting star, Jurgen Withers, who sells his soul to the Devil for one more shot at fame and a chance to escape his miserable life pushing a broom for an experimental German theatre group. Das War Mal is a playful romp through recent foreign film parodies that will be sure to tickle your foreign language funny bone.
Made as part of the 2005 Boston 48 Hour Film Project, Das War Mal represents what results when Playomatic Media Group only has 48 hours to conceive, script, produce, shoot, edit, score and master a short film. On the evening of Friday, April 8th, Playomatic randomly drew the "Foreign Language" genre out of a hat and was informed the following items must be included in the film:
Prop: String of Pearls
Character: J. Withers, Former Child Actor
Line of Dialogue: "Im not really like this"
Thank God for team member Victoria Engelmayer who is fluent in German!
This acclaimed short was shot on Saturday, April 9th in Salem and Beverly, MA and edited on Sunday, April 10th in Somerville, Massachusetts. It was first screened at the Landmark Theatre in Cambridge on Tuesday, April 12th and later included in the FilmNorth Short Film screening on April 26th in Beverly, Massachusetts.

  • what the fuck was that.....it really freaked me out!

  • Good freak or bad freak out?

  • We made two films in German in 2005, the other one "Squeeze Your Thumbs" was shot in NYC.

  • its remind me the movie, "seven seal"

  • Thanks, Nefandix, it should remind you of Seventh Seal. That's the parody we were aiming for...thanks for noticing.

  • Shucks, thanks! The only part of that movie that was dubbed was the part with the Devil in the Red Dress, to help portray that she was the Devil. We have never made a commentary version. Did you see our "Squeeze Your Thumbs" film? It's very different, but also partly in German.

  • Bertolt Brecht would be so proud!

  • I don't know I guess both.

  • Ahhh this is so good! (Especially for a German 1 student like me, I felt proud at how much I understood!)

Everyone involved did a very good job. I loved the "experimental" theatre troupe! So funny. Much applause and thanks for the fun watch.

    Guten nacht!

  • Oh mein Gott! That was soooooo good. Fantaastic work! Far better than the "Scheisse" I've seen on that "On the Lot" reality show. Enjoyed every moment and even learned that "Geh Scheisse" means "Piss off"

Is there a commentary version of the film? Was any of the German dubbed?

Thanks for posting this! I love it love it. Definitely a favorite.
