I get what he is saying about bathroom breaks, but it is REALLY hard for a student to follow a lesson if he/she is leaving to go to the bathroom halfway through...i understand the need to "eliminate waste" but it does become difficult to get through material when students are missing essential parts of a lesson. We, as teachers are expected to teach a certain content, and we only have a certain amount of time to do it. What is the solution?

yeah thats why in today's society you have these seriously unhappy, unmotivated, highly paid workers.

Monetary rewards may not be as motivating as you think. Check out Drive by Daniel Pink: mostly, people want to know that what they do is valuable. People want to do a good job. If what they do isn't valued, it doesn't matter how much money you pay them, they only do enough to get by.

So it is clear that punishments are not good motivating factors for educating students. I can agree with that!
However, The point has not been well made that financial compensation is not an adequate motivation. The fact is financial reward is how our society functions. Learning performance deserves reward! Performance baced compensation MOTIVATES!
It makes sense to do the minimum amount of work for a given amount of money. If you do two days worth of work for one day's pay, you're making half as much!
