The athletic director of a Bates County school was arrested on suspicion of running a meth lab, authorities said.
Mitch M. Warmbrodt, 46, is the athletic director at Butler High School. He was arrested Wednesday at the school.
Officials said Warmbrodt was arrested on a charge of acquiring more than nine grams of ephedrine, which is a cold medicine that is also an ingredient in methamphetamine. The medicine was bought at several pharmacies in Butler, according to the probable cause statement.
Authorities said a search of Warmbrodt's rural property uncovered a meth lab. Investigators said they found Michael Schooley walking out of a barn. According to court documents, Schooley was carrying materials that tested positive for meth.
"I was in disbelief; I talk to this man every day as a close friend," junior Matt Nisely told KMBC's Chris Nagus.
"I always thought he had good morals and the kids always liked him," parent Tonya Nisely said.
Warmbrodt and Schooley both face felony charges of possession of a chemical with intent to create a controlled substance.
