I can't get enough of this masterpiece. Gordon Lightfoot is Canada! One of the best voices and songwriters this world has ever seen, would the rest of the world agree?
-
The 1978 version is a wee bit better.

I like both versions, really . . . but this one is a little less "pop" sounding . . . :-)

Another heartbreaker from Gordie...damn. He knows. He's been there.

same song- the one you're thinking of is the more "radio friendly" countrified version from 1978- this is the original "folk" version from 1968
-
Gordon wrote this back in '68 when he and his first wife, Britta, with whom he had two children, were going through a rough patch (both cheating)
-
yes this was the original from 1969's "back here on earth" the other that you are refering to is off 1978's "Endless wire"
-
WOW this is great!!! never heard......

@johnnybermo there is a 1978 version of this that he released, it used to be on here but is gone now. In my opinion, the 1978 version is so much better too, it is a shame that it is not here anymore, if anyone has it can you please put it back up?

Has there ever been a better song writing poet than Gordon Lightfoot ?

Is there another song with a similar sounding chorus? It seems very similar to something else I've heard but I can't pin it down. I know cos when I heard this song first I didn't recognise the verse melody, but instantly recognised the chorus

He has another song called Circle of Steel but the melody is not the same. He rerecorded Circle is Small in the late 70s and the lyrics changed slightly. The melody was the same but the tempo was a little slower and used more "electrified instruments". It went to #33 on the charts. I like the 60s version better so I used it here.
