@phantombelcher I'd have no problems with a remake, so long as it has a good traditional orchestral soundtrack like this one.

And it would have made a very short and uninteresting story if he'd instead fully accepted the chance to be a Star Fighter when he first got there, as he would have died. Which is what our friend wanted to do. Actually, it makes the moral a bit of a broken aesop. The basic idea is, 'When you get a chance to do something amazing, grab it with both hands and hold on tight'. But if he'd done that right away, he'd have been killed.

Yes, Hollywood would mess up a remake or sequel, but if an independent film maker with passion got the rights to it, then it would have the possibility of something special. Hollywood would only care about the money. That's why today's movies mostly suck.

For all those who want a remake of this... I say thee nay! Why subject this movie to the pure SUCK that is today's Hollywood? Let it stand the way it is, and be remembered properly with fondness.
I wouldn't be adverse to a sequel, though.
