The North Fork of the Blackfoot River flows from the mountains northeast of Bonner into the main Blackfoot River. It is very, very clear and cold. Cutthroat trout are the main sportfish. It would be a fly fisherman's paradise except for the apparent lack of a sizeable fish population. It is likely this that keeps the fishing pressure down and allows the angler to fish in almost total solitude.

Another reason the Blackfoot River is so popular is because it is both very scenic and diverse.

The Cutthroat that are native to the Blackfoot River are now endangered from warm water species such as the Northern Pike. The Milltown and Bonner Dam were a natural barrier to the Pike. Now that they have removed both Dams, there is a significant threat to all native species in the wild Blackfoot River. The Blackfoot was one of my most favorite rivers to flyfish. I guess I will have to acquire a taste for pike.

that is very interesting. I wonder how pike or bass or other warm water fish would survive the cold water of the NF of the Black Foot? It is really really cold. Nevertheless, your comment is good. We should track this issue somehow.

The Clarkfork Coalition is claming that the Pike were already there in the Blackfoot River. In 40 years of fishing the Blackfoot I have never caught a Pike on the Blackfoot-only on the lower Clarkfork. (They are huge!) As far as "Warm water species goes, (Thats what the biologists call them) Pike live year around in Canada. It doesnt get any colder than that and yes they will migrate into and spawn on the Northfork of the Blackfoot. What the wolves did to our elk-PIKE are to Cutthroat

here it stinking england, where the rich are SO rich and the poor are all crammed in 2 council estates, any good land and decent river gets privatised and you cant fish it, unless your a millionaire like david seaman or chris tarrent.

everywhere is private and off limits and trespassing etc.

here you only are allowed on footpaths and roads.

    hate the place.
