Aphrodite (Mythology Project)

The Greek goddess Aphrodite, also known as Venus to the Romans, was born from the foam of waves after Cronus castrated Uranus' genitals. After landing on Cyprus, she was accompanied by Zephyrus (west wind), Love, and Desire to Mount Olympus.

Aphrodite is mainly recognized as the goddess of love and beauty, although she is also honored as goddess of marriage, desire, fertility, nature, sea, and even war. Venus is Aphrodite's Roman counterpart, and is also known as the goddess of love and beauty, as well as vegetation, the gardens/vineyards, and everything Aphrodite is recognized as.

Since Aphrodite was such a beautiful goddess, everyone wanted her, both gods and mortals. Being a proud godess, she refused them all, only to be punished by Zeus later on. She was given Hephasteus (lame and ugly god of the forge) as a huband. However, Aphrodite was not a commited wife. She had relationships with Ares (offspring: Phobes (Fear), Deimus (Dread), Eros (Cupid), and Harmonia), Herms, Poseidon, Zeus, Dionysus, and Nerites (water deity). Some of her mortal lovers were Adonis, Anchises, Boutes, Phaon, and Phaethon. Helios (Sun) caught her and Ares in Hephasteus' bed when he was away on a trip. He immediately went to Hephasteus, who set a trap for Aphrodite and Ares. They were caught in the act, and all the other gods were called to witness their crime.

Her main centre of worship was in Cyprus, and scholars believe that the worship came to Greece from the east. Many of her characteristics are considered seminic.

Aphrodite's symbols are: myrtle, dove, sparrow, swan, pomegranate.
