I've seen this before on television also. On the show they said the reason the lion adopted the antelope was because she was excluded/ostracized from her pride. I'm not sure really, but I think this story is so fascinating.

This is a shortened brief version of an actual show that featured this on Animal Planet. I recall when the antelope was killed the Lioness cried like it would if it had lost a cub. They said she cared for these antelope cause she had a traumatic experience with her own cubs death.
